BioIssawi's law of social motion, n. The following proposition: ‘In any dispute, the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the stakes at issue. That is why academic politics are so bitter.’ It was first published by the Egyptian-born US economist Charles Philip Issawi (1916–2000) in his book Issawi's Laws of Social Motion (1973), although it had been formulated earlier by the US political scientist Wallace Stanley Sayre (1905–72), without written publication, and is also called Sayre's law.
